How to run a half-marathon Week 1

Posted by Shane on March 29, 2008

And hopefully you’re able to run 30 minutes without stopping. Are you ready to get started? This program is designed to get you across the finish line in one piece, you will not break any records with this. I’ve decided to break this down into a weekly segment instead of just throwing the whole thing at you. So let’s get started!

You’ll be running four days a week. I will have a suggested day of the week to run these, but you can mold this to fit your own schedule. Saturday is set as the long run each week.

Monday: 3 miles

Tuesday: Off

Wednesday: 4 miles

Thursday: 3 miles

Friday: Off

Saturday: 5 miles

Sunday: Off

So your first week will have you running a grand total of 15 miles! Make sure to take it easy on your Thursday run, your body is still getting use to running and you have just pushed yourself probably further than you ever had before.

Good job! Week 2 is next.

The Runner Got Me High!

Posted by Shane on March 28, 2008

The New York Times is reporting that scientists have identified the reason runners get the feeling of euphoria.

Researchers in Germany, using advances in neuroscience, report in the current issue of the journal Cerebral Cortex that the folk belief is true: Running does elicit a flood of endorphins in the brain. The endorphins are associated with mood changes, and the more endorphins a runner’s body pumps out, the greater the effect.

The article does mention that the feeling is stronger as your workout gets more intense so now that it’s been scientifically proven, perhaps now is the time to start chasing your own natural high.
